We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Lindsay Jerome to The Woman’s Clinic as an OB/GYN. She starts seeing patients this July, so we sat down to hear about her journey in medicine.
Q: What made you want to become a doctor and specialize in this field of medicine?
A: I have always wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember. Initially, going into med school and residency, I wanted to do orthopedic surgery. I was going to be the Saints team doctor. That was the plan!
In the third-year rotation of medical school, you go through different segments of different types of medicine to see each little piece of those, and I scheduled my OB/GYN rotation first because I was 100% sure I didn’t want to do that.
I got into that rotation, and I actually started on gynecology doing big cancer surgeries with ovaries and uteri, and it was awesome. And then I did my OB rotation and got to deliver a baby, and it was the greatest thing ever. I have loved it, and it is magic and a miracle every single time we do it.
And so then, my husband told me I had to get a real job and I couldn’t be in school forever. Now I am just a general OB and I get to do a little bit of everything!
I get to walk women through the hardest parts and the greatest parts of their lives. I get to deliver babies and do hysterectomies and just see them every year and see how life is going.
I just love every single part of that. And every single day is a different day. So I never do the same thing twice!
Q: Briefly describe a peak experience of yours as a doctor. Maybe an interaction with a patient where you really helped her overcome something tough.
A: I have a patient right now who I have delivered for twice, and she’s pregnant with her third baby, and I get to meet the other two. She brings them to her appointments. We get to talk about what they’re doing in school. It’s just really fun to be able to be involved in a patient’s life throughout and in their kids’ lives and to know that the kid you delivered is playing tee-ball this year or their baby has learned to walk this year.
Q: That’s so touching. I’d love to hear you talk about why you’re so excited to be coming to The Woman’s Clinic.
A: One of my best friends throughout medical school and residency is Dr. Ashley Johnson. She has worked here her whole career, and we talk every day about patient care, things that we would do differently, or how to manage a certain case. And she’s been hardcore recruiting me ever since we left residency. So, I’m really excited to get to come back and work with her again.
What also brought me to The Woman’s Clinic is the fact that they deliver at the Baptist Hospital. I feel like this hospital is super safe. They have a lot of resources and can take care of any kind of patient situation. If there’s an emergency, they have 24/7 in-house anesthesia.
They also have 24/7 in-house OB hospitalists who are a backup to us as OB physicians. If there’s an emergency, there’s more than one set of hands who can take care of you. That really appeals to me. I’m very, very interested in patient safety. I very much want my patients to have the best experience that they can have, and I think that this hospital is going to provide that.
Q: What advice do you have for patients who are looking for an OB/GYN?
A: Being able to have a relationship with a provider is important. Feeling that you’re being listened to, that your feelings are being heard and accepted, and that y’all are having discussions together is very important.
I think that being able to have an appointment where you’re able to say, ‘Look, this is what I want,’ and then for a physician to be able to say, ‘Look, this is what is safe,’ and make those mesh the best that you can is important.
There are a lot of resources out there, too. Go to several different websites, especially provider websites, where you can read about how a provider has gone through school, where they went, etc.
Q: Speaking of provider information, tell us a bit about you personally and your background.
A: Well, I grew up in Mississippi. I’m from Canton and went to Canton Academy. I went to Mississippi State for my undergrad, and then I went to UMMC for med school. So, I’m Mississippi-born and bred. I’ve been here forever! I married a country boy from Canton, and we have two little kids: a six-year-old and a three-year-old.
Going back to med school, I completed my residency at UMMC in 2018 and I’ve been in practice for almost six years now in Jackson. My favorite thing about OB/GYN will always be delivering babies. It’s the greatest. You can’t get any better than that, but I really am interested in surgery. I really like to do robotics and minimally invasive surgery.
Q: That’s wonderful. Anything else you’d like to share before we sign off?
