Could Weekly Yoga Help Alleviate Arthritis?

Namaste. And grab your yoga pants!

A new study conducted by Dr. Clifton Bingham, director of the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center, is thought to be the largest randomized trial ever to explore yoga’s effect on arthritis patients. The participants were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1 had two yoga sessions per week and Group 2 was put on a waiting list as the control group. The physical and mental health of both groups was assessed regularly.

After 8 weeks, the yoga group had a 20 percent improvement over the control group in pain, energy levels, mood and physical function. They reported being able to better perform physical tasks and were able to walk faster than those in the control group. Historically, health professionals have questioned the safety of people with arthritis participating in yoga because changing positions can be tough on tender joints. However, this study shows that with a yoga instructor who works closely with arthritic patients, yoga can be a wonderful addition to treating arthritis. Dr. Bingham does suggest talking with your doctor to discuss specific concerns before starting a yoga program.
