Researchers at the University of Iowa believe that the answer to that question may, in fact, be yes!
Preeclampsia is a condition that develops at the 20 week mark, and beyond, in approximately 5 – 7 % of all US pregnancies. Characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine, preeclampsia can cause organ damage and death of both the mother and baby. Currently, the only treatments for the condition are medications aimed at the individual symptoms, bed-rest, hospitalization, and early delivery of the baby as soon as developmentally possible.
But, the UI researchers have isolated a particular hormone, that they say is predictive of the condition, identifiable as early as the 6th week of pregnancy. All conditions can be viewed through a “test-model-cure” circle; meaning, first there has to be a reliable test for the condition, then a model can be designed that will lead to treatment and ultimately a cure. Until now there has been no break in that circle for preeclampsia – the researchers believe that this breakthrough can initially lead to earlier intervention, but also provide the basis for targeted treatments and ultimately a cure. The team is currently investigating if the hormone is also present in the urine, which would make an “at home” test possible.
