There was a flurry of press attention in response to Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy to prevent the development of breast cancer. It’s an immensely personal topic; full of individual life experiences and emotions. So, what are the facts?
- Only about 1 in 600 women carry a genetic mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, and only account for 5 -10% of all breast cancers in the US
- Not all mutations are the same, the risk for women with a mutation developing breast cancer can vary
- The mutation also increases a woman’s risk for Ovarian Cancer.
It’s important to discuss your concerns with your Doctor, because every woman is different. But, in general, genetic testing is indicated if:
- You have a first degree relative (mother, sister, aunt) who developed breast cancer before the age of 50
- Multiple family members, on the same side of the family, with breast or ovarian cancer.
- Male family members with breast cancer
- Jewish Ancestry plus at least on early onset breast or ovarian cancer in the immediate family
