Adulthood! For most of us, our 20’s and 30’s were a mixed bag of enjoying the freedom of building our own lives and also realizing that life puts up quite a fight when it comes to achieving your dreams.

During this time, some priorities shift in terms of health. While younger, most wellness issues revolve around discovery and establishing a routine healthcare habit. As you begin building your own lifestyle and settling into your own life in your 20’s and 30’s, The Woman’s Clinic is here to help you make the best decisions for your health.

Know Your Family Health History

As you battle through all the new stresses of building your life in your 20’s and 30’s, one important thing to approach your health is to know your family’s health history. Many long-term health issues can be hereditary, and when you’re young you have a better chance of curbing any proclivity towards specific diseases.

If you’re able to, have conversations with you parents and extended family. Trace back the health issues, typical symptoms, and types of medications they used as they navigated their own health issues. Knowing this (and sharing that information with your doctor) can help you build a better nutrition and health routine specific to you and your body.

You Are What You Eat

Right now is the best time to form the right eating habits! Nutrition is a long-term health strategy that is proven to help achieve better quality of life and disease avoidance. Often, that can simply be ensuring moderation in foods like processed foods, red meats, or that are high in sugar. But specific macro and micro nutrients are important to make sure you’re getting the right amounts in. Protein is important to maintain a healthy level of, with studies suggesting that 60-70 grams of protein per day being a good basic starting point. Important micronutrients include potassium, omega-3’s, calcium, phytonutrients, and iron.

Don’t Forget Your Important Appointments

Reproductive and breast health are an important focus for your medical checkups. Clinical breast exams are recommended every three years, a pap test every two years, and a pelvic exam yearly. Self-exams are important to do between appointments as well, and to do so monthly.
